Savannahs & Lakes Safari of Kenya.

Just south of the equator, Nairobi enjoys a spring-like climate and it has always attracted world attention as the centre of big-game safaris for the rich and famous. - Teddy Roosevelt needed 500 porters to carry supplies- on this safari you will not need quite so much luggage! You will be met at the airport from your flights and transferred to the hotel in Nairobi where you will meet your Big Journey Company Tour Director and the rest of our tour group.

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we transfer to the Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway station to take the train to Voi. This new, high speed passenger service has excellent views as we travel over viaducts, embankments and cuttings. When we arrive in Voi, we will be met at the station and transfer to Tsavo West National Park.
This afternoon we will enjoy our first game drive. Tsavo West is a beautiful, rugged savannah, with grasslands and acacia forest. Belts of riverside provide perfect opportunities for spotting Hippos, lions, cheetahs and enjoying the many diverse plant and bird species.

We depart this morning for the Amboseli National Park. Writers have described this area as ‘a home for the Gods’. With the backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain Mount Kilimanjaro, this is one of the best spots in the world to watch for elephants. WE will enjoy an afternoon game drive before heading to our accommodation for this evening.

Today the road leads us to the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley, to Lake Naivasha National Park. Lake Naivasha is the highest of the lakes that form the Great Rift Valley and it is surrounded by a series of volcanoes and calderas. Lake Naivasha’s name comes from the Masai word meaning “heaving” or “to and fro”, in reference to how turbulent the waters can get in the afternoons.
We will enjoy a late lunch on arrival and spend the afternoon at leisure, giving you time to explore our accommodation and follow your own interests.

Lake Naivasha is an ornithologist’s paradise, as well as having excellent fishing, with tilapia and black bass first introduced by the early settlers. This is the perfect place to relax, walk with a guide or sit under a canopy of mature shady Yellow Fever trees and listen to the sound of hippos and view the rich bird life. Today will be spent at leisure, giving you the opportunity to explore the area further and take inspiration in the same region that inspired the backdrops for the Lion King and where Joy Adamson worked and wrote Born Free.

An early breakfast this morning before proceeding to Kenya’s richest and most famous game reserve: Masai Mara. The jewel in Africa’s crown, Masai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. 1,510 sq.km of open savannah, woodland and tree-lined rivers create an eco-system which supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. Lions are found in abundance throughout the park as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen and you may also be lucky enough to find rhino.
In the afternoon, we will enjoy a game drive in the reserve before returning to camp early evening for dinner.

Today we will spend the whole day on game drives in the national park, hoping to complete our spotters list of the ‘Big 5’. Patience here is often rewarded with unique sightings: a pride of lion stalking their prey; a solitary leopard retrieving its kill from the high branches of an acacia tree; male wildebeest sparring to attract females into their harem.

Today we depart after breakfast to return to Nairobi. We will be able to use the facilities at the Akorn Lodge in Nairobi before transfers and drop off at the airport for onward flight arrangements. Flights home on this final day must depart after 6pm local time.
